Botany and Chemistry program

Basic Information.

Program Title: Botany and Chemistry

Program Type:double

B-Professional Information.

The program aims to provide a through, degree- level education in the main areas of chemistry and botany. It encompasses traditional studies of whole – plant biology and related subjects as well as the essential subjects of chemistry with a consideration of recent advances at biochemical, ultrastunctural and molecular levels. At the end of this program, students are expected to have good information, data handling, problem solving, team working in Botany and chemistry as well as theoretical and practical studies for tools and modern instruments used in advanced technology. Thus at the end of this program, the graduates must have knowledge and experience to describe, critically analyze and evaluate data in the chemistry and botany helping  them to find careers  in biological research or teach in high schools.

 

  1. The specific aims of the program are: the program mainly aims to  :

1- Provide the graduates with a wide range of knowledge related to the theories, facts, concepts and essentials of chemistry and botany .

2- help the graduate to recognize the relationship and interaction among  the chemistry, the botany and  the environment.

3- provide  the graduates with a wide recognition about physiology, systematic concepts,  molecular biology, biotechnology, ecology and related basic science.

4- provide the graduate to apply theories and concepts of mathematics and statistics to understand and underlying mechanisms related to the essential processes in chemistry and botany.

5- Help the graduates to Plan and conduct experiment work, review safety and quality control processes, report on practice and critically evaluate the outcome sowing to the modern programs and teaching.

6-  Provide the graduates  to gain the skills and attitude necessary for independent learning and participate effectively in research activities.                                                                                                                       7-Increase the information of the graduates   about   Islamic studies, IT and language skills.

8-Enable students to understand the life, basic processes in relation to organisms and ecosystems and asses the different levels of organization in biological systems.

  1. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOS).

 A- Knowledge and Understanding.

 In addition to the knowledge mentioned in the general part for the Basic Sciences graduates must be able to:

A1-Explain the basic scientific facts, concepts, principles and techniques in the field of biology and related subjects of basic science  as chemistry, geology, physics, zoology and mathematics.

A2- Mention  the relevant theories and their applications involved in the field of biology and in other related subjects of basic science in the field of anatomy, bacteriology, entomology physiology, histology, cytology, genetics and classification of kingdom.

A3- Illustrate the processes and mechanisms supporting the structure and function from the atom to the organism in different ecosystems.

A4-Define the related  terminology, nomenclature and classification systems.

A5-Describe the theories and methods applied for interpreting and analyzing biological data related to pure science and technological applications.

A6-Characterize the relation between animal taxonomy  and plant kingdom and the environment and describe the developmental biological progress.

A7. Recognize  the specific and general vocabulary and sentence composition for improving the reading  and writing skills.

A8.Recognize the advanced  theories,  Facts, concepts, and fundamentals related to the fields of chemistry and botany.

A9. Exhibit familiarity with the principles and procedures used in chemical analyses as well as in characterization and structural investigation of chemical compounds.

A10. Illustrate the nutrients and energy flow through plant , populations, and ecosystems.

A11. Mention the necessary knowledge related to patterns of plant distribution, population processes, dynamics, and biodiversity as well as plant systematic, genetic, physiology, ecology and  in the field of microbiology, virology, microbial physiology as well as analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.

A12. Describe familiarity with the major metabolic pathways and their interactions on the cellular level and in the living organisms.

A13. Mention  the structure and functions of various types of plant cells and cell organelles in unicellular and multicellular organisms.

A14. Appreciate concepts of bio-diversity and maintaining of natural resources.

A15.Recognize the  essential knowledge of recent subject as biotechnology, molecular biology and application of recent techniques in the production of bioproducts.

A16.Explain  the principles and procedures used in chemical analysis, chemical reactions, formulasand characterization of chemical  compounds.

A17.Identify advanced knowledge on plant ecology, taxalimit and the characteristics habitat features, environmental science and the adaption of organisms to extreme environment.

A18. Identify specific and general vocabulary and sentence composition for improving the English  reading skills

B-Intellectual Skills

The graduates of Botany/Chemistry  program must be able to:

B1– Differentiate between the essential facts, theories, concepts and principles of biology and related subjects of basic science; chemistry, physics, mathematics, geology, Taxonomy  and zoology.

 B2-Assess qualitatively and quantitatively biological and relevant data.

 B3- Select the subject-related knowledge and appropriate judgments to solve biological problems.

 B4- Assess the interrelationships and impact of a specific organism on its ecosystem.

 B5-Construct several related and integrated information to confirm, make evidence and test conventional   hypotheses.

 B6. Interpret an Islamic English text and common scientific terminology.

 B7. Deduce forensic evidences.

 B8. Evaluate and criticize an existing piece of information in the light of evidence provided by recent advances in botany.

 B9. Reformulate a bulk of information such as pathways for biosynthesis of biologically active compounds or macromolecules.

 B10. Construct several related and integrated advanced information programs to confirm, analyze, evaluate, make evidence and test hypotheses and employ this information in programs   problem  solving.

 B11. Link  the subject-specific theories, concepts and   principles such as relationship between genes and their products, interactions and modulation of the actions of different types of physiological regulators in plants.

 B12. Interpret quantitative data related to the fields of botany and chemistry from graphs, figures, tables and other sources of information.

 B13. Differentiate   between the different states of matter, elements and compounds.

B14. Consider the Islamic subjects in English languish and common scientific terminology

C-Practical and Professional Skills

The graduates of Chemistry and Botany programs must be able to:

C1- Apply appropriate laboratory techniques and tools for processing technical procedures considering scientific guidance for evaluating the outcomes in a scientific report.

 C2– Use techniques  and tools considering the scientific ethics.

 C3– Solve problems  using a range of formats and approaches.

 C4– Apply the different methods used for preparing, processing, interpreting and presenting data for biological samples.

 C5. Conduct  the investigations using recent equipment and instruments.

 C6. Use appropriate and contemporary laboratory equipment and tools efficiently in a safe, ethical and responsible manner to investigate living organisms and systems.

 C7. Criticize the different advanced methods used in addressing subject related issues in botany and chemistry.

 C8. Handle chemical materials safely taking into account their physical and chemical properties to avoid hazards associated with their use.

 C9. Employ statistical analyses and computational tools to analyze and interpret experimental data in terms of theories relevant to chemistry and botany.

 C10. Consider variations inherent in dealing with biological materials such as sample size, accuracy, precision and calibration.

 C11. Employ research techniques, information retrieval, modeling, taxonomic keys, bioassays and tools of molecular biology.

 C12. Use the  plant samples to prepare the  slides  for microscopic examination and identification of different types of cells and tissues.

 C13.Carry out experiments  on plant material at a variety of levels of the biological     organization, cells, tissues, up to whole plant and prepare herbarium specimens.
