B- Professional Information

1- Program Aims:

The specific aims of the program are to:

1- Provide students with the main concepts of microbiology-chemistry and related basis of biology, physics, mathematics and Computer science plus all Islamic modules.

2- Deliver students with a broad understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and microbiology emphasizing Mycology, Bacteriology and Virology and their role in our daily life.

3- Study the diverse aspects of the field of microbiology and chemistry, including biochemistry, ecology, genetics, molecular biology, pathogenicity, biodiversity, applied, industrial and biotechnological application of microorganisms in different fields.

4- Equip students with Islamic studies, IT and language skills.

5- Prepare the student either for a career as a microbiologist or chemist or for further studies leading to a higher degree in Microbiology.

6- Learn, in addition to scientific courses, beliefs, behaviors, doctrine, holly Quran, hadith and Tafseer through Islamic studies.

All the above might contribute to solving societal problems and the development of the surrounding environment and industry through applied research.

2- The attributes of a Microbiologist/Chemist

In addition to the attributes of the basic science graduates, the graduates of microbiology/chemistry must be able to:

  1. Explain advanced subjects and think clearly about microbiological and chemical methods.
  2. Design and perform chemical and microbiological field survey and laboratory investigations.
  3. Develop students’ abilities in organization, collection, analysis, evaluation and selection within the field of microbiology and chemistry.
  4. Postulate concepts and choose appropriate microbiological and chemical techniques to solve problems on scientific basis.
  5. Use effectively the information technology relevant to microbiology and chemistry.
  6. Participate effectively as a member in a team work recognize and respect the views and opinions of the others, as well as exhibiting the sense of beauty and neatness.
  7. Develop the skills and attitude necessary for long life and independent learning and participate effectively in research activities.
  8. Produce graduates with a range of well-developed skills that can be used to effectively disseminate information about microbiology and chemistry.
  9. Develop those advanced transferable, intellectual, and practical skills which may be of advantage in a wide range of employment.
  10. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

3.A. Knowledge and understanding:

In addition to the general knowledge acquired by basic and biological sciences graduates, the microbiologist/chemist graduates must be able to:

A1. Explain the basic scientific facts, concepts, principles, techniques relevant theories and their applications involved in the field of biology and related subjects of basic science as ecology, chemistry, physics, geology, zoology, botany, microbiology, mathematics, statistics, humanities, and computer science.

A2. Illustrate characters, structure, function and genetics in the scientific area of Botany, Zoology, Entomology and Microbiology.

A3. Illustrate the processes and mechanisms supporting the structure and function of the specific topics in different ecosystems.

A4.  Define the related terminology, nomenclature and classification systems.

A5. Describe the theories and methods applied for interpreting and analyzing biological data.

A6. Characterize the relation between animal and plant kingdoms and the environment.

A7. Explain the roles played by microorganisms in the life and the useful application of some chemicals and harmful effect of others as well as their biological control.

A8. Explain knowledge about diversity and evolution in diverse aspects of the field of microbiology including genetics, molecular biology, pathogenicity and phylogeny.

A9.  Illustrate the principles, procedures and techniques used in chemical analysis and microbiological technology.

A10. Describe the constitution and properties of the different chemical compounds including their applications in microbiology.

A11. Demonstrate biochemical, bioprocesses and biotechnological applications of microorganisms.

A12. Describe the information and data, and their setting within a theoretical framework with a full and critical understanding in English language.

3.B. Intellectual Skills:

In addition to the general skills acquired by basic sciences graduates, the microbiologist/chemist graduates must be able to:

B1. Differentiate between the essential facts, theories, concepts and principles of biology and related subjects of basic science.

B2. Assess qualitatively and quantitatively biological and relevant data.

B3. Select the subject-related knowledge to solve problems.

B4. Assess the interrelationships and impact of a specific organism on its ecosystem.

B5. Construct several related and integrated information to confirm, make evidence and test hypotheses.

B6. Demonstrate independent logical thinking.

B7. Use integrated approaches to evaluate, analyze and interpret in various subjects in Microbiology and chemistry.

B8. Identify and solve problems, both individually and co-operatively.

B9. Conduct a report on an independent project.

B10. Assess the moral, social and ethical issues of investigations and the need for ethical standards and professional codes of practice.

B11. Consider the Islamic subjects in English language and common scientific terminology.

3.C. Practical and professional skills:

In addition to the general skills acquired by basic sciences graduates, the microbiologist/chemist graduates must be able to:

C1. Apply appropriate laboratory techniques and tools for processing technical procedures considering scientific guidance for evaluating the outcomes in a scientific report.

C2. Use techniques and tools considering the scientific ethics.

C3. Solve problems using a range of formats and approaches.

C4. Apply the different methods used for preparing, processing, interpreting and presenting data for biological samples.

C5. Use laboratory equipment correctly in a safe and ethical manner, paying attention to risk assessment and safety regulations.

C6. Carry out chemical techniques and aseptic techniques in microbiology such as isolate, culture, enumerate and identify a range of micro-organisms.

 C7. Record, analyze experimental data, interpret their validity, apply statistical analyses and suggest further investigations.

C8. Take effective notes and record experimental procedures and laboratory protocols.

C9. Prepare scientific reports by using the scientific literature correctly and effectively in the chosen areas of Microbiology and chemistry.

C10. Use the scientific literature correctly and effectively by collecting research topic in one field to write research reports and essay.

In addition to the general skills acquired by basic sciences graduates, the microbiologist graduates must be able to:

D2. Identify roles, responsibilities and their performing manner.

D3.Think independently, set tasks and solve problems on ethical scientific basis.

D4. Work in a group and communicate with others positively.

D5. Consider community linked problems, ethics and traditions.

D6. Acquire self- and long life- learning.

D7. Use effectively scientific models, systems and tools.

D8. Deal with scientific patents considering property right.

D9. Exhibit the sense of beauty and neatness.

D10. Meet deadlines and priorities workloads to achieve targets.

D11. Overcome problems.

D12. Locate information from a wide range of sources and extract, collect and present that information in an appropriate form and use IT effectively.

D13. Maintain good records of laboratory work and of results.

D14. Assess the relevance and importance of ideas of others.
