Zoology / Chemistry program

1-Program title: Zoology / Chemistry.

1-Program aims:

The specific aims of the Zoology / Chemistry program are oriented to give the graduates the opportunity to:

  1. Recognize the role of zoology & chemistry in basic sciences for the development of society.
  2. Develop scientific approaches that meet needs considering different species of animal kingdom, environmental conditions and ecological adaptation.
  3. Utilize scientific facts and theories in physiology, genetics, molecular biology, principles of chemistry and physics to analyze and interpret practical data.

  4-Develop knowledge and experience of working with contemporary laboratory techniques relevant to different disciplines in chemistry and zoology.

  1. Plan and conduct experimental work using appropriate instruments, review safety regulations and quality control processes, assess and manage risks, report on practice, and critically evaluate the outcomes.
  2. Apply concepts and theories of chemistry to interpret life’s basic processes from cell to organism to ecosystems.
  3. Recognize the relationship and interactions among chemistry, zoology subjects and environment.
  4. Employ theories and concepts in mathematics and statistics to interpret the underlying mechanisms of the essential processes in chemistry and zoology.

9- Learn, in addition to scientific courses, beliefs, behaviors, doctrine, holly Quran, hadith and Tafseer through Islamic Studies.

Graduate Attributes:

In addition to the general graduate attributes of basic science, the zoology / chemistry graduates must be able to:

  1. Design and perform zoological field survey and chemical laboratory investigations.
  2. Utilize scientific facts and theories to analyze and interpret data of different methods.
  3. Collect, analyze, and present zoological and chemical data using appropriate formats and techniques.
  4. Use the sources of biological information and communication technology to remain current with advances in knowledge and practice
  5. Establish life-long and self-learning required for continuous professional development.
  6. Establish effective interpersonal relationship to communicate ideas and arguments.
  1. Work effectively as a member or a leader of an interdisciplinary team.
  1. Solve problems related to zoological and chemical research, industrial, economic, health, agricultural and environmental challenges.
  1. Carry out experiments at a variety of levels of the biological organization, cells, tissue, up to whole animal.
  1. Describe familiarity with the major metabolic pathways and their interactions of the cellular level and on the living organisms.
  1. Be acquainted of knowledge about structure and functions of various types of animal cells and cell organelles in unicellular and multicellular organisms.

3- Intended learning outcomes (ILOS)

 

A-Knowledge and Understanding:

By the end of this program, student will be able to:

A1– Explain the basic scientific facts, concepts, principles, techniques and the relevant theories in addition to their applications in the area of biology and related subjects of basic sciences.

A2- Illustrate characters, structure, function and genetics in the scientific area of botany, zoology, entomology and microbiology.

A3- Illustrate the processes and mechanisms supporting the structure and function of the specific topics in different ecosystems.

A4– Define the related terminology, nomenclature and classification systems.

A5- Describe the theories and methods applied for interpreting and analyzing biological data.

A6-Characterize the relation between animal and plant kingdoms and the environment.

A7. Explain the principles and procedures used in general, organic and inorganic chemical analyses as well as in characterization and structural investigation of compounds.

A8. Describe familiarity and comprehension of terminology as in experimental embryology, nomenclature as in protozoology, and contemporary tools used for the classification systems of animals as in zoology, plant anatomy and entomology.

A9. Interpret a profound understanding of how the chemistry of biological

molecules determines their biological functions with a special consideration to the major metabolic pathways and their interactions in living organisms as in physiology, molecular biology and entomology.

A10. Explain the concepts of bio-diversity and maintain natural resources as well as the developmental progress in chemistry and biological sciences.

A11– Identify specific and general vocabulary and sentence composition for improving the reading skills

B-Intellectual Skills

By the end of this program, student will be able to:

B1– Differentiate between the essential facts, theories, concepts and principles of biology and related subjects of basic science.

B2– Assess qualitatively and quantitatively biological and relevant data.

B3- Select the subject-related knowledge to solve problems.

B4- Assess the interrelationships and impact of a specific organism on its ecosystem.

B5- Construct several related and integrated information to confirm, make evidence and test hypotheses.

 B6– Deduce an existing piece of information in the light of evidence provided by recent advances in zoology, plant physiology and anatomy, vertebrates, cytology, genetic, histochemistry and organic chemistry.

B7– Apply several lines of related information to confirm, make evidence and test hypotheses related to recent progresses in research such as stem cell and applications of nano-technology in biology as in plant morphology, physics, organic and inorganic chemistry.

B8– Deduce the different pathways for biosynthesis of biologically active compounds or macromolecules as in physics, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

B10– Select mechanisms and procedures to deal with scientific problems relevant to advanced approaches in zoology, molecular biology, cytology, genetic, histochemistry and chemistry.

B11– Manipulate subject-specific theories, concepts and principles to deduce the relationship between genes and their products, interactions and modulation of the different types of physiological regulators in animals.

B12– Postulate the role of various cell signaling mechanisms in regulating cellular functions and growth as in cytology, genetic and general chemistry.

B13- Consider Islamic subjects in English languish and common scientific terminology

C – Practical and Professional Skills

By the end of this program, student will be able to:

C1- Apply appropriate laboratory techniques and tools for processing technical procedures considering scientific guidance for evaluating the outcomes in a scientific report.

C2– Use techniques and tools considering the scientific ethics.

C3– Solve problems using a range of formats and approaches.

C4– Apply the different methods used for preparing, processing, interpreting and presenting data for biological samples.

C5– Prepare chemical materials and biological samples safely taking into consideration their physical and chemical properties to avoid hazards associated with their use as in physiology, physics and inorganic chemistry.

C6– Use appropriate statistical and computational tools to analyze and interpret experimental data in terms of theories relevant to plant morphology, chemistry, physics, math and zoology.

C7– Search for the validity, credibility, and relevance of literature in a

critical thinking approach as in vertebrates.

C8– Estimate variations inherent in dealing with biological materials such as sample size, accuracy, precision and calibration as in ecology, vertebrates, behavior and plant anatomy.

C9– Employ contemporary information retrieval, modeling approaches, taxonomic keys, bioassays and tools of molecular biology as in physics, entomology, vertebrates and invertebrates.

C10– Preserve animal samples and prepare sections for microscopic examination and identification of different types of cells and tissues as in histochemistry and ecology.
